Description of the Project

“The Protection of Geographical Indications and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed in the European Union Law” is supported by Erasmus+ Programme Jean Monnet Activities Jean Monnet Modules from 2016 to 2019. The project is coordinated by Istanbul Technical University.

 The main aim of this project is to develop a new course in module structure on “Protection of Geographical Indications and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed in EU Law” which targets higher education students from different departments such faculties or departments of engineering, architecture who would like to learn about the protection of geographical indications and traditional specialities guaranteed  in EU Law at Istanbul Technical University. The duration of the course is 42 hours (14 weeks).

A new teaching module on protection of geographical indications and traditional speciality guaranteed in EU Law was introduced, consisting of a new interdisciplinary course. The staff of the module is multidisciplinary and international. The course is addressed to students who do not normally come into contact with European integration studies.  The course is elective.

The overall objective of the module is to give lectures on specific EU quality schemes, to disseminate knowledge, to raise awareness about geographical indications and traditional specialities guaranteed both in Turkey and in EU.

The other aim of the project is to support students in training aiming at the acquisition and the use of knowledge, employability in the European labour market.

The module aims to teach basic aspects of EU Law and protection of geographical indications (protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications), traditional speciality guaranteed, to raise awareness about EU Law and GIs and TSG both in Turkey and in the EU, to support participants in training and other related activities aiming at the acquisition and the use of knowledge, skills and qualifications to facilitate personal development, employability and participation in the European labour market.

An interdisciplinary elective course about geographical indications and traditional speciality guaranteed, open for the registration of the interested students from all departments at Istanbul Technical University.

Our primary target groups are undergraduate students from all departments of Istanbul Technical University, our other target groups are students from other universities, public professionals working in agri-food sector, producer groups, officials working in ministries like Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Turkish Patent Institute, Ministry for EU Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, judges, lawyers, trademark attorneys, public administrators, local development agents and chambers of commerce and general public as a consequence the module has wide spectrum of target groups.

Other related stakeholders and interested people can also participate to the module. By participating to the module the students and the other participants will not only learn the basic concepts of EU Law but they will also learn the protection of geographical indications and traditional specialities guaranteed both in international agreements, in EU Law and Turkish Law. By the help of the module the professionals can update and broaden their knowledge about geographical indications and traditional specialities guaranteed.

The teaching content of the module is multidisciplinary, unique and original.

The module also aims to create awareness among the students who do not automatically come into contact with EU studies in their curriculum.
