The module coordinator Dr. Didem Özgür participated to the 5th Ovacık Agriculture and Sakız Sheep Festival in Çeşme, Izmir organized by Cesme Municipality on 24.08.2019. Cesme Mayor, Ekrem Oran made an opening speech about the local agricultural products of Çeşme which are Çesme Melon, gum tree, white onion, black wheat, thyme and lavender. Çeşme Mayor emphasized the importance of local agricultural products and their impact to rural development. Çeşme Mayor explained the following activities of Çesme Municipality about local agricultural products.

Chios Mayor also participated to the Festival.

Izmir Municipality made an application to Turkish Trademark and Patent Office for registering Cesme Melon as a designation of origin on 18.05.2016. The application process is still going on.

Çeşme's Best Melon competition was held on the first day of the festival. The Ovacık Melons were competed for their tastes, colors, odors and shapes.

After the competition, Ovacık Melon, village bread and Ovacık Kelle Cheese were served to the the guests who attended the festival.

The module coordinator Lecturer Dr.Didem Özgür visited a local bazaar in Istanbul and talked with the producers and sellers about the importance of geographical indications and their impact on rural and economic development.

 

The third certification ceremony of  "The Protection of Geographical Indications and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed in the European Union Law” Jean Monnet Module took place on 02 July 2019 at Istanbul Technical University together with the module coordinator Lecturer Dr.Didem Özgür, the key staff of the module and Dean of Faculty of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering Prof.Dr.Beraat Özçelik.

Certifications of Participations were given to the students who completed the “The Protection of Geographical Indications and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed in the European Union Law” course sucessfully during the 2018-2019 term.

The Summer School “Roll Me Like One of Your Kebaps” was organized by Istanbul Board of European Students of Technology between 17-27 June 2019 at Istanbul Technical University with 20 participants from 14 different countries. Students from Romania, Poland, Czech Republic, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, Iceland, Serbia, Moldova, Russia and France participated to the summer school. The students were coming from different departments like civil engineering, computer engineering, law, chemistry and biotechnology.

The Module Coordinator Dr.Didem Özgür, and the Dean of the Faculty of Chemical Metallurgy of Istanbul Technical University, the key staff of the Module, Prof. Dr. Beraat Özçelik participated to the summer school as invited speakers.  Dr. Didem Özgür and Prof. Dr. Beraat Özçelik made presentations about, Turkish Cuisine and The Protection of Geographical Indications and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed in the European Union Law and in the Turkish Law to the participants of the summer course on 21 June 2019 at Istanbul Technical University. In the afternoon session of the event, the participants made presentations about the products that were registered as geographical indications in their countries. In their presentations, the students also mentioned the problems of the registered products in their countries and made their suggestions. Their presentations were assessed by Prof. Dr. Beraat Özçelik and Dr. Didem Özgür and the students got their final marks for the summer school.

 

Quality Policy of the European Union and the Protection of Geographical Indications and Traditional Specialities Guaranteed in the European Union Law Seminar: 

Within the scope of the dissemination activity of the Jean Monnet Module “The Protection of Geographical Indications and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed in the European Union Law and the 30th Anniversary of the Jean Monnet Programme “Quality Policy of the European Union and the Protection of Geographical Indications and Traditional Specialities Guaranteed in the European Union Law” Seminar took place on 17 May 2019 at Istanbul Technical University. Nermin Kahraman, Sector Manager for Agriculture (Including Food Safety, Veterinary, Phytosanitary Policy) from Delegation of the European Union to Turkey participated to the seminar as an invited speaker. Nermin Kahraman made a presentation about Quality Policy of the European Union and Protection of Geographical Indications and Traditional Specialities Guaranteed in the European Union Law to the participants during the seminar. The Module Coordinator Dr.Didem Özgür presented the activities of the Jean Monnet Module to the participants and she also gave information about the protection of Traditional Specialities Guaranteed in Turkey and gave information about Jean Monnet Programme to the participants. Apart from the students and academics, experts who are working at the Ministry of Agriculture, lawyers, technology transfer office representatives, trademark and patent attorneys attended to the seminar.

 

Together with the module participants we visited Eataly to learn about Italy’s registered geographical indications and designations of origins in the EU on 29.04.2019. 

 

“Protection of Geographical Indications and Designations of Origin for Agricultural Products and Foodstuffs in the EU Law” Lecture:

The module’s key staff, Dr.Gail Elizabeth Evans from Queen Mary University of London gave a lecture called “Protection of Geographical Indications and Designations of Origin for Agricultural Products and Foodstuffs in the EU Law” on 26.04.2019 to the students of the module at Istanbul Technical University.

 

The module coordinator Dr. Didem Özgür made a presentation about Eurodesk Network, European opportunities like internships, master programmes, summer courses, volunteering, Erasmus+ Youth Programme, scholarship opportunities about European Union and geographical indications to the students of the module on 12 April 2019.

 

 

The Eurodesk Best Practices Booklet was published in December 2018. In the booklet best practices of Turkish Eurodesk Contact Points that were implemented in 2018 was presented. EUGIs Jean Monnet Module was also presented in this booklet. The booklet was published in 2000 copies and distributed to all Turkish Eurodesk Contact Points. For the outreach activities of Jean Monnet Module and the Attitude, Investment and Domestic Goods Week the module coordinator, Dr.Didem Özgür was invited to Handan Ziya Öniş Primary School to make a presentation about geographical indications on 19 December 2018.

The Geographical Indications Seminar took place at Istanbul Technical University on 14 December 2018. Dr.Didem Özgür presented the activities of the Jean Monnet Module to the participants and she also gave information about the protection of geographical indications in the European Union Law. The key staff of the module who is Assist.Prof.Dr. Gökmen Gündoğdu from Yıldız Technical University gave information about the protection of geographical indications in Turkey. Birol Uluşan from Metro Gross Market presented the activities of Metro Grass Market about geographical indications to the participants. Apart from students public authorities, lawyers, technology transfer officers, trade mark and patent attorneys participated to the seminar.

We displayed our Jean Monnet Module Plaque with great honour.

"The Protection of Geographical Indications and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed in the European Union Law” Jean Monnet Module was awarded the right to use the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 Label by the European Commission.

 

Info Day of the Jean Monnet Module was organised at Istanbul Technical University on 12 October 2018 within the scope of Erasmusdays 2018. In the Info Day Dr.Didem Özgür presented the activities of the Jean Monnet Module to the participants. In the Info Day general information about the protection systems of geographical indications and traditional specialities guaranteed both in the EU and in Turkey was given to the participants. Dr. Didem Özgür empasized the cultural heritage dimension of geographical indications and traditional specialities guaranteed to the participants in the Info Day.

EUGIs Jean Monnet Module was published as a success story on the Istanbul Technical University European Union Centre Research Office’s  fourth issue of the 2018 year’s e-bulletin. Istanbul Technical University’s graduation ceremony was held on 29 June 2018 at Ayazaga Campus. The theme of 2018 year’s graduation ceremony is "Istanbul Technical University is at the Top". The academic staff who won national and international awards and coordinated national and international projects from 2012-2018 years were invited to the graduation ceremony individually by the Istanbul Technical University’s Rector who is Prof.Dr. Mehmet Karaca. The related academic staff was invited to the stage at the beginning of the graduation ceremony. The EUGIs project team was also invited to the graduation ceremony

The Second Certification Ceremony of EUGIs Jean Monnet Module took place on 28 June 2018 at Istanbul Technical University together with module coordinator Dr.Didem Özgür, key staff and Dean of Faculty of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering Prof.Dr.Beraat Özçelik, and key staff Prof.Dr. Tüzin Baycan.

EUGIs Coordinator Dr.Didem Özgür visited Mrs.Branka Tome, Deputy Head of Unit, European Commission DG Agriculture and Rural Development Unit B.3 Geographical Indications in her office, in EU Commission on 25 May 2018 in Brussels. During her visit Dr.Didem Özgür made a presentation of the module to Mrs.Branka Tome. Mrs. Branka Tome became interested into the module and was pleased to learn that there is a course related with geographical indications and traditional specialities guaranteed at Istanbul Technical University that is co-funded by Erasmus+ Programme Jean Monnet Activities Jean Monnet Modules.
